Members of CAA’s Review College perform a vital role in supporting the double-blind peer review of submissions to CAA’s annual conference. Peer reviewers assist the Scientific Committee and the Editorial Board by providing assessments of abstracts proposed for presentation at the conference as well as full papers submitted for publication in the proceedings.
Reviewing for CAA
Annual Conference
Reviewing of abstracts for CAA’s annual conference is undertaken in the last quarter of the year. Once the call for papers closes, review college members will receive an email with instructions and the timeline for that year’s review process. Reviewers are generally asked to assess 5-7 abstracts, although the number of requests may be higher or lower depending on the total number of proposals received as well as the expertise needed to evaluate them. Reviewers are asked to accept or decline all invitations in a timely fashion, and reviewers are never obligated to accept a review request.
Proceedings
Members of the Review College may also be asked to provide feedback on full papers submitted for publication in the conference proceedings. The review of proceedings papers is a longer process normally undertaken during the second half of the year, following the annual conference. Reviewers may receive 1-2 requests, at most, and are free to decline any that they are unable to complete.
Requirements for Joining the Review College
Membership of the CAA Review College is open to anyone who has previously been the author of 2 or more papers accepted for presentation at a CAA International Conference; has published 2 or more peer reviewed articles on a subject related to computational or digital archaeology; and/or has professional experience related to computational or digital archaeology that demonstrates a level of expertise equivalent to 2 peer reviewed publications. Membership in CAA is not a requirement for being part of the Review College.
