National Chapters: Czechia-Slovakia

The increasing development of computer applications in archaeology is one of the most important trends in the field of archaeological research and cultural heritage. In the Czech Republic and Slovakia, computer applications in archaeology have a long tradition, and the establishment of the CAA National Chapter was an important step in bringing the local group into the international community. The joint chapter for Czechia and Slovakia was formally established in May 2012 at the local Czech conference (originally called Počítačová podpora v archeologii) in Loket nad Ohří (CZ). After a decade of “isolated” development, our group of specialists has become part of the global CAA family. This event is closely linked to the founding member of the Czechia-Slovakia National Chapter – Dr Ladislav Šmejda, who was its Honorary Chairman until his sudden death in 2022.

At present, the Czechia-Slovakia National Chapter is dedicated to ongoing activities, including annual conferences with the participation of experts from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Austria and other neighbouring countries, reflecting new projects, methods and findings in the field of Czech and Slovak archaeological projects, as well as in the international character of research. The Czechia-Slovakia National Chapter also supports students in their activities, dealing with computer applications in archaeology by organising professional workshops and lectures in a university environment, shaping a new generation of digital archaeology followers.
