Sponsored session at UISPP Congress

We would like to invite you to participate in the session “The scientific value of 3D archaeology” organized by Hans Kamermans, Chiara Piccoli and Roberto Scopigno in the framework of the 17th UISPP Congress, and in cooperation with CAA (Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology). The conference will take place in Burgos (Spain), on 1-7 September, 2014.

The methods and techniques that fall under the broad definition of 3D archaeology have reached a mature state, where the advance in technology is at the service of archaeological research. This session is dedicated to the presentation of methods, techniques and applications within the broad topic of 3D archaeology, with a specific focus on their scientific application.

Papers of this session discuss how the use of 3D models has helped in the analysis and interpretation of archaeological evidence in a way that could not have been achieved by traditional documentation.

The session is open to communications presenting applications that include, but are not confined to, the use of 3D models for testing (reconstruction) hypotheses in the virtual environment, monitoring and studying archaeological buildings, excavations or objects, performing virtual restoration, enabling the reading of past land use by using 3D sampling techniques (e.g. LiDAR, short range scanning, photogrammetry).

Papers may also discuss ways in which the obtained 3D models can be integrated with meaningful information in the form of metadata or multimedia productions and best practices to ensure their long-term storage and accessibility.

All conference papers must be sent to each session organizer through the conference web site www.burgos2014uispp.com by 30 April 2014 with the following information: title, author’s name, mail, reference institution, abstract and keywords.

Congress participants must indicate in which sessions they want to include their communications and/or posters by May 31, 2014.
